INJURED?…. Get BACK in the gym!

One of the most common discussions within the four walls of a physio’s room goes a little like this….I

Physio: What have you done to yourself?

Patient: I’m not sure, I was in the gym this morning and I felt something go in my back..

Physio: *assesses, diagnoses, treats

Patient: *satisfied…. “So do you want me to have a few weeks off the gym?”

Where the conversation goes from here is really dependent on a few things…

How much experience your physio has in exercise prescription

How much your physio trusts that you’ll listen and do the right thing

If your physio truly has your end goal at the front of their mind and looks to empower you to get there

Continuing on with the theme from the last few weeks, we truly believe that there is no reason to 100% rest someone because of an injury. At Stride, we use our in-depth knowledge in strength and conditioning, coupled with the knowledge and respect of tissue healing to construct an exercise program that ensures our patients will progress back to their end goal and beyond!Let’s have a look at a prime example via this weeks case study.

Tom, is a 23 year old male who has injured his back deadlifting in the gym. After an initial appointment with Jackson, he was diagnosed with acute discogenic lower back pain. With Toms’ end goal of being able to deadlift and squat pain free at the front of mind, Jackson formulated the following treatment regressions/progressions, which accommodated for Tom’s symptoms and respected the tissue healing response.

Body Weight Squat Goblet SquatBarbell | Front Squat Barbell Back Squat

Hip Hinge KettleBell Hip hinge | Romanian Deadlift Deadlift From blocks/Floor

By regularly touching base with Jackson, Tom was able to progress through his regressions quite comfortably and return to the gym with no concern.

We hear about it all the time. Individuals like Tom, are told to completely rest and avoid the gym. This more often than not results in Tom being non-compliant with the proposed treatment plan which in turn risks further injury. Tom would eventually return to the gym unguided which risks further injury or even worse, he had been told from the start he couldn’t squat and deadlift ever again!

As a patient, find a physio who works backwards from your end goal and who keeps you active! You will be more compliant with your rehab meaning you will return to the things you love much quicker!
