It’s the first week of pre season… you’re a little underdone and arrive to training with markers set up all over the field, a little too far apart for your liking. You’ve done way less than what you should have during the break, and as a result you’ve felt a sharp ping in your hammy as you try to slow down from your third 200m run through of the night…..
If that story doesn’t resonate with you, let’s try scenario 2….. Weekend warrior…. Middle aged, loves to go jogging in the warmer months. Over the past few weeks you’ve been building up your kilometres, and on this specific day you’ve decided to add hill runs into your running repertoire… Four steps in, POP… Right in the middle of the calf. The pain causes you to limp straight away and by the time you get home you look like you’ve had half a calf job (apparently they exist!) done to your leg……
This weeks blog is the start of a four week series as we tackle the ins and outs of muscle tears.
Unfortunately muscle tears can affect any person, of any age, of any sport, or any gender. The most common muscle tears we see in the lower limb are the muscles that cross two joints, which can include the calf (ankle and knee), quadriceps/thigh (hip and knee) and hamstring/back of thigh (hip and knee) muscles.
If you sustain a muscle tear the first 48 hours are crucial! For best results it’s important to follow the NO HARM (Heat, alcohol, re-injury, massage) and RICE (Rest, Ice, Compress, Elevate) protocols.
If you suspect you’ve sustained a muscle tear, there’s no reason to wait and see a physiotherapist, get the help you deserve (even if it’s the day of the injury!)!
